NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) Application
Preferential consideration is given to applications received by April 15, 2024

A grant awarded to UWA by the National Science Foundation will allow up to 10 students per year the opportunity to participate in a scholarship and mentoring program designed to help them achieve their academic and career goals.  

Applicant’s eligibility:

  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. National or U.S. Permanent Resident.
  • Will be enrolled full-time (12 or more credits) at UWA.
  • Major in one of the biological and environmental sciences offerings
  • Demonstrate academic potential or ability (minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0). *
  • Standardized test scores, ACT or SAT (22 minimum or 1000 minimum, respectively).*
  • Demonstrate financial need, defined for undergraduate students by the U.S. Department of Education guidelines for need-based federal financial aid.
  • Scholarship renewal is based on meeting the above requirements and achieving a minimum 3.0 GPA. 
  • Nursing students are not eligible

*Will consider slightly lower scores

Successful applicants will receive: 

  1. $8,500 scholarship assistance per student per academic year (maximum of 4 years).
  2. Academic advising and assistance.
  3. Professional development activities.
  4. Career services and counseling.
  5. Peer mentoring.
  6. Faculty mentoring.

To retain the UWA BOSS II scholarship for the maximum of four (4) years, recipients must:

  1. Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
  2. Maintain full-time status at UWA .
  3. Demonstrate satisfactory progress towards a degree in biological and environmental sciences.
  4. Participate in all required events in the program (including, but not limited to, regular group meetings and mentor meetings; typically, there are only 6 – 7 meetings per semester).
  5. Regularly check and respond to scholarship program-related communications.

Only complete applications will be reviewed. Please check that each of the following items are included before submitting your application:

1- A complete scholarship application form.
2- A typed 250 to 300-word personal statement
3- Two letters of recommendation, at least one from a teacher who knows the student well and can assess his potential for success in biology, should be submitted online by the recommenders at www.uwaboss.com/recommend.
4- Additionally, the UWA Offices of Admission and Financial Aid must have student’s high school transcripts with ACT and SAT scores and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) results by the scholarship deadline.
